MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS and Selenium is an element, a metal found in trace amounts in the soil and many foods. In some areas, deficiency appears to be common. Selenium may benefit MS patients in at least three ways: 1.
Important antioxidant for protecting Myelin. ANTIOXIDANT The enzyme Glutathione Peroxidase is very important for antioxidant protection of myelin. This enzyme exists in two different forms, one that requires Selenium, and one that does not. Most people have both forms in their body. If Selenium is deficient, the enzyme form that requires it may not be as effective in protecting the Myelin. Supplementation may help to improve this situation. Also, Selenium improves the antioxidant capability of Vitamin E and some authors recommend taking both. Selenium is a powerful antioxidant in its own right. Combined with Vitamin E and CoQ10 its effects are increased IMMUNE SYSTEM Studies have shown that Selenium is necessary for normal immune system activity. Supplementation, especially when Beta-Carotene is also taken, may help improve immune function. In theory, returning the immune system closer to normal could be helpful in Multiple Sclerosis, which is a disease of abnormal immune system activity. Many studies have showed that Selenium may help prevent cancer. HEAVY METALS Many experts believe that excess mercury in the body contributes to developing MS. The main source, they believe, is the fillings in our teeth. Not everyone agrees with this theory. One fact is undeniable. Accumulation of heavy metals such as lead and mercury is known to be toxic to nerve cells. Selenium can bond to these metals and make them much less dangerous. Exposure to heavy metals is a regular part of daily life. Selenium may be a beneficial supplement for nearly everyone. DOSAGE Published recommendations vary between 25mg per day and 200 mg per day. It is generally recommended that you not take more than 200 mg per day. Too much Selenium can interfere with the body's use of Copper, another trace element. |
