VITAMIN B-12

COBALAMIN

SUPPLEMENTATION

TYPES OF SUPPLEMENTS

There are two forms of B-12 supplements comercially available in the USA: Cyano-cobalamine, the most common, and Methyl-cobalamine. However, the body can only use Methylcobalamine.

Before Cyanocobalamine can be used it must first be broken down. In this process a cyanide molecule is released into the body and a methyl group takes its place. Because this conversion becomes less efficient as we age, taking cyanocobalamine may not guarantee that you actually get enough Methylcobalamine. Therefore, many experts consider methylcobalamine to be the supplement of choice.

DOSAGE OF SUPPLEMENTS

Recommendations vary, but authors agree that there is no reported toxicity or side effect from B-12. However, it should be taken with Folic Acid (1mg per day) because the two work together and deficiency of one may decrease the effectiveness of the other.

Methylcobalamine is preferred for treatment of deficiency states, in the elderly and Multiple Sclerosis. Cyanocobalamine is acceptable for maintainence therapy otherwise.

MAINTAINENCE: Up to 400ug (micrograms) per day

DEFICIENCY: Start 2000ug per day for 4-6 weeks

Then - 1000ug per day until symptoms are gone

Then - 400ug per day for maintainence.
