VITAMIN B-12
and
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

B-12 is critical for the proper utilization of the essential fatty acids (EFA). The EFA in turn are critical for the development and maintainence of nerve cells and myelin. Deficiency of B-12 or EFA can cause damage to nerve and brain cells.

Many people with demyelinating disease do not metabolize B-12 properly. This is due, in part at least, to a decreased ability to remove the cyanide molecule and substute the methyl group in its place. Therefore they are more susceptible to myelin and nerve damage and less able to repair the damage.

Up to 60mg per day of methylcobalamine have been used safely in treatment of MS. Vision and hearing were also noted to improve. Cyanocobalamine may not be as effective in treating MS patients.

ALSO

B12 deficiency is the most common cause of dementia in elderly and can cause symptoms similar to Alzheimers disease. B-12 supplementation can improve memory in elderly patients.
