MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

AND

BETA-CAROTENE

Beta-Carotene is part of the large group of antioxidants called "Carotenes" or "Carotenoids." It is fat soluble and is converted by the body, as needed, into Vitamin A.

Multiple Sclerosis patients may benefit from Beta-Catotene supplements for several reasons:

  1. Fat soluble antioxidant capable of helping protect myelin
  2. Improves the activity of other antioxidants like Vitamin C and E
  3. Important for normal Immune System function

ANTIOXIDANT

Beta-Carotene is a strong antioxidant in its own right. Also, it works together with other antioxidant, both fat soluble and water soluble, to improve their actions. Beta-Carotene supplementation is part of an overall anti-aging and health program.

IMMUNE SYSTEM

Vitamin A is critical for normal function of the immune system. Patients with Multiple Sclerosis have an abnormal immune system. Taking Beta-Carotene, which is converted into Vitamin A may help restore normal immune function in patients with MS.

SAFETY / CAUTIONS

Few side effects have been reported in otherwise healthy people taking large doses of Beta-Carotene for as long as 12 years.

However, at least one study suggested that in patients with a history of asbestos exposure or who smoke there was an increased risk for lung cancer.

Beta-Carotene supplements should be avoided in patients with alcoholic liver disease, uncontrolled diabetes and untreated hypothyroidism.

Over time, Beta-Carotene supplementation may give the skin a slightly yellow or orange coloration.

DOSAGE

Typical published recommendations range from 12,500 IU to 25,000 IU per day. Best results may be obtained if Vitamins C and E are also taken.
